Roundup: Veritas falls short

? Mark Randtke and Kirk Long fought through the flu and were named to the all-tournament team Saturday at the Flint Hills Preseason Tournament, but their efforts weren’t enough for Veritas Christian School.

“Our kids played extremely tough,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said after a 50-47 loss to Flint Hills Christian in the third-place game. “We just ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. We have flu going around, and our two top players are sick. They played through it, but didn’t have enough to finish it.”

Randtke led all players with 18 points. Long sank three three-pointers and finished with 13 points and four assists.

Williamsburg — Seabury Academy lost for the third time in three days at the Williamsburg Tournament, but coach Marcus Heckman liked what he saw from his young squad.

“They grew up a lot this weekend,” Heckman said. “That’s why this tournament was so great for us. I’m really encouraged.”

The game was tied at 17 at halftime, and Seabury was within eight points after three quarters. But Williamsburg pulled away after Seabury point guard Adam Davis fouled out with 71/2 minutes remaining.

Davis led Seabury (0-3) with 10 points, and Grayson Dillon added nine.

Heckman starts one junior, three sophomores and a freshman. He’ll find out how much his team improved during the weekend tournament Tuesday when the Seahawks play host to Kansas School for the Deaf. KSD defeated Seabury, 34-28, Thursday in the season opener.
