The bride-to-be is the daughter of Clifford and Criselda Garley, Los Lunas, N.M. She grew up in Santa Fe, N.M. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. She is working on a master’s degree in education at the University of Illinois.

The future groom is the son of Tom and Karen Erb, Lawrence. He is a 1993 graduate of Lawrence High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colorado College. He is pursuing a doctorate in medicine at the University of Illinois.

The couple plan a December wedding in Santa Fe, N.M., and a spring reception in Lawrence.

Jo Ann Sjoberg, Two Harbors, Minn., announces the engagement of her daughter Tara Ann Merkel, Lawrence, to Stanley Lewis Nicholas, Topeka.

The bride-to-be also is the daughter of the late Dr. Richard Merkel. She is a 1977 graduate of Topeka West High School. She graduated from Bryan Travel College in 1988 and attended Washburn University. She has been employed with Paul Davis Restoration since 1999 as a job cost accountant.

The future groom is the son of Truman and Beverly Nicholas, Topeka. He attended Seaman High School and graduated from Lawrence Gardner High School. He is employed by the city of Topeka Parks and Recreation Department as an equipment operator.

The couple plan an Aug. 21, 2004, wedding in Lawrence.
