Jayhawk swimming signs eight athletes

The Kansas University swimming and diving squad had eight swimmers sign national letters of intent Monday for the 2004-05 season.

Signees include Lauren Bonfe, Canisteo, N.Y.; Lindsey Herre, Bonner Springs; Anne Liggett, Portland, Ore.; Nikki Maples, St. Charles, Ill.; Beth Roach, Elkhorn, Neb.; Allie Rubino, Naperville, Ill.; Terri Schramka, Madison, Wis.; and Sierra Slavin, Shawnee.

“All of these eight swimmers will have an immediate impact on our program,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “Each swimmer will help make us a Top 25 program.”

Kansas men’s golf signs Colorado recruit

Kansas University men’s golf coach Ross Randall announced the signing of Walt Koelbel to a national letter of intent Monday.

Koelbel is a senior at Cherry Creek High in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

KU bowlers thrive at St. Louis event

Kansas University’s men finished third in a 48-team field and the KU women were 12th in a 36-team field at the National Collegiate Match Games bowling tournament last weekend in St. Louis.

Sophomore Rhino Page paced the men by finishing 10th overall with an average of 220. Senior Marc D’Errico averaged 203 for 40th place. Other KU men’s averages were Alan Emmons 200, Chris Dilley 190, Jason Reese 190 and Trent Overbey 175.

Junior Kelly Zapf paced the KU women and earned all-tournament honors with a 200 average. Leanne Downey averaged 195, Kelly Sanders 170, Sarah Roenfeldt 163, Kimber Jantz 154 and Jennnifer Van Ruyven 142.

Both Jayhawk teams will travel this weekend to the Leatherneck Classic in Moline, Ill.
