Haskell men fall again

Southwestern rolls in 111-85 rout

Haskell Indian Nations University point guard Danny Polk made a lot of memories in his 2 1/2-year career with the Fightin’ Indians, but Monday’s game probably wasn’t one of them.

Polk, the third-leading scorer in Haskell history, led the Indians with a team-high 14 points, but HINU couldn’t stop Southwestern’s outside shooting. The Moundbuilders sank 10 first-half three-pointers and built a 20-point lead in the first half en route to a 111-85 blowout at Coffin Sports Complex.

“I was glad to be able to end my career at Haskell,” said Polk, a semester graduate. “But it was pretty disappointing to end it the way I did.”

Southwestern missed just two three-pointers in the first half and led, 62-42, at halftime.

The Moundbuilders were just as effective in the second half, doubling their lead to 95-55 with 9:45 left in the game.

It could have been worse, but Haskell closed the game with a 28-10 run.

“We’re definitely tired right now,” said HINU coach Jamie Morrison of his 1-10 team, which suffered a 71-70 setback Sunday to Graceland.

The Indians don’t play again until a home game Jan. 12 against Friends, and Morrison said the time off would help his team.

“Right now I think our fatigue is as much mental as it is physical,” he said. “I mean, I could tell our legs weren’t really with us tonight, but we really just didn’t put the effort out there defensively like we had been in the past two games.”

HINU's David Gorneau, right, drives against Southwestern's David Freivogel. The Fightin' Indians lost, 111-85, Monday at Coffin Sports Complex.

Morrison said the lopsided loss was a bad note on which to end Polk’s wonderful career.

“It didn’t matter what game it was, he came out to play every single time,” Morrison said of Polk, who was also HINU’s third all-time leader in steals and assists.

“I’m not just saying that because I like the kid. We’re definitely going to miss a player like Danny Polk in this program.”
