Has “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston redeemed herself as a movie star? In 2002, the actress better known as Rachel stretched her wings in “The Good Girl” (9 p.m. today, Cinemax), a bleak little independent feature with moments of droll, dark humor.

Aniston plays a cashier at a failing five-and-dime who has tired of her pothead husband’s (John C. Reilly) lack of ambition. To break the monotony, she embarks on a steamy fling with a young, “Catcher in the Rye”-obsessed co-worker (Jake Gyllenhaal) — an affair that brings her more passion and drama than one woman can handle. Aniston won well-deserved praise for her performance in this movie about getting what you wished for (and then some). Not for the kids.

• Al Pacino and Robin Williams show off their Oscar-caliber talents in the murky 2002 drama “Insomnia” (7 p.m. today, HBO). Hilary Swank (another Oscar winner) co-stars, but the movie belongs to Al and Robin’s nightmarish game of cat and mouse.
• The first days of college can be the most exciting time of your life — or the most lonely and dispiriting. The 10-part documentary series “Freshman Diaries” (8:30 p.m. Sunday, Showtime) follows 10 students as they matriculate at the University of Texas in Austin.
