McAferty

Elmer and Velma McAferty, McLouth, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family gathering. They also traveled through the western United States and Colorado, where they spent their honeymoon.

Elmer McAferty and Velma Newell were married Aug. 22, 1953, in Oskaloosa.

Elmer retired in 1998 as postmaster in McLouth. Velma retired in 1997 as an elementary school secretary at McLouth.

Their children are Mark and Sandra Nowasell, Tonganoxie; Mike McAferty, Mesa, Ariz.; Ronnie and Tina Beach, Oskaloosa; and Steve and Deb McAferty, McLouth. They have eight grandchildren.

Reitz

Joe and Nancy Reitz, Eudora, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Aug. 17 with a family dinner at their son’s home in Shawnee.

Joe Reitz and Nancy Miller were married Aug. 17, 1963, in Bloomington, Ind.

Joe is a Kansas City native and attended Rockhurst High School. He received a bachelor of arts from Kansas University, a master’s degree from Indiana University, and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a professor in KU’s School of Business.

Nancy is originally from Hammond, Ind. She attended Indiana University and received a bachelor of arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a bachelor of science in accounting from the University of Florida. She is a certified public accountant with Mize Houser in Lawrence.

The couple’s children are David Reitz, Missouri City, Texas; Chris Reitz, Shawnee; Elizabeth Dennis and Stephanie Fawcett, both of Eudora; and Cathleen Reitz, Overland Park. They have 11 grandchildren.

They also celebrated their anniversary with a trip to San Francisco, where they spent their honeymoon 40 years ago.
