Glickman vs. Brownback Senate race unlikely
Former Democratic Rep. Dan Glickman said Thursday it would be great to have a viable Democratic candidate to challenge Republican incumbent Sen. Sam Brownback in 2004 — but he probably won’t be that challenger.
“There’s still a little bit of a door open, but it’s pretty slim,” Glickman told the Mid-America News Network.
The executive director of the Kansas Democratic Party, Pat Murray, said this was the first time Glickman had publicly discussed a possible candidacy.
Glickman, a former secretary of agriculture under President Clinton, said part of his reluctance was the fund-raising effort needed to mount a challenge, which would mean giving up his job as director of the Harvard Institute of Politics.

Adult charges filed against teen in shooting
A 15-year-old accused of shooting a toddler and teenager during a daytime gunfight has been charged as an adult.
Terry L. Hutton, of Kansas City, appeared Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court on two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. A judge entered a routine not guilty plea for Hutton.
Hutton’s bond was set at $100,000.
Prosecutors allege Hutton fired an assault rifle at some rivals in a different car. A bullet went through the trunk of a car and hit 2-year-old Tracee Partee in the head. She suffered permanent brain damage.
A 15-year-old girl walking down the street was shot in the leg as she ran from the gunfire.
