First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., is offering topical Sunday school classes for adults from 10:10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. each weekend in the fellowship hall.

The Faith & Life Series subject for this week is “Faith & Communicating the Gospel,” led by Cal Downs.

The church will have its fifth Sunday Celebration at 11 a.m. this weekend. A fellowship dinner will start at noon.

PeaceWays information night will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

PeaceWays is a personal growth program offered by the church to help people make peace with their past and explore a deeper relationship with God.

The sessions will be at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Sept. 2, in the fellowship hall.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

The Lawrence Motet Singers will launch their 29th season this weekend by singing at area churches.

The 16-member ensemble will sing before and during the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

The group also will sing before and during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

The chorale prelude at both churches will be “Three Fuguing Tunes” by William Billings. The group also will perform a contemporary piece, “Give Me Jesus.”

Other works by William Byrd, Thomas Morely and Alexander Arkhangelsky also will be sung.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Children’s G.I.F.T. Opener continues from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday and ends with a special children’s celebration at the 9 a.m. Sunday service at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Prayer Team Development is at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at the home of Tim and Nancy Bonner.

A new, midweek Seeker’s Service will begin in September.

Plymouth Congregational Church

The official start of the fall programs for all ages at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., is Sept. 7.

Innovative Sunday school programs will begin, including “Rainbow Journey” for elementary students. This is a rotational system, with each classroom having its own theme, such as puppetry, cooking and computers.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Lawrence Motet Singers will present a choral prelude of music by the 18th century composer, William Billings, to begin the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Directed by David Grisafe, the Singers are starting their 29th year. The group specializes in a capella, sacred choral music from the Renaissance. They will sing several pieces during the service.

The annual Trinity Fest will be at 8 a.m. Sunday. All of the church’s ministries will be showcased to let the community know about the parish’s activities.

A sandwich pot luck will follow the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, with beverages and chips provided.

A silent auction for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity will be held in conjunction with Trinity Fest.

Unity Church of Lawrence

Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane, is offering a class called “Love and Logic,” an easy-to-learn and unique approach that unlocks the secrets of successful parenting.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn specific “how to’s,” not just theoretical concepts.

Cost for the class is $25 for the six-week program. Classes will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21.

Scholarships are available, and space is limited to 20 people.

Pre-registration is required, and childcare arrangements may be made by calling the church at 841-1447.

“Creating a Spiritual Relationship,” a discussion group for couples, will meet from 9:45 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Sundays from Sept. 7 to Oct. 19 at the church.

It will be based on the book, “Creating a Spiritual Relationship: A Guide to Growth and Happiness for Couples on the Path,” by Paul Ferrini.

Tanya Mayer and Paul Friedman will facilitate the first session, the group members will take turns leading the other sessions.

Donations will be accepted.
