Steinbrenner gives $10K to Red Sox charity

Boston — New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner set aside his rivalry with the Red Sox Friday to make a $10,000 donation to the Jimmy Fund, the longtime Boston charity that works with children with cancer.

WEEI-AM held an all-day radiothon that had raised more than $1 million.

Uecker returns to booth after knee surgery

Milwaukee — Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Uecker returned to work Friday night for Milwaukee after missing nine games following double knee replacement surgery.

Uecker, 69, walked with crutches into the broadcast booth at Miller Park and was greeted by a bunch of balloons.

Baltimore calls up outfielder Raines Jr.

New York — Baltimore purchased the contract of outfielder Tim Raines Jr. from Triple-A Ottawa Friday and sent right-hander Travis Driskill outright to Ottawa.

Raines, the son of former major leaguer Tim Raines, played left field and batted second Friday night.

Gonzalez might be done

Arlington, Texas — Two-time AL MVP Juan Gonzalez has a torn muscle in his right calf and might not play another game for Texas. Gonzalez’s agent, Alan Nero, said the player got a second opinion on the injury, and an MRI revealed the tear. Gonzalez would have to wear a soft cast for at least two weeks.
