At the end of a miserable 2001 season — in which coach Terry Allen lost his job, KU finished 3-8 overall and won only one Big 12 Conference game — the Jayhawks finished on something of a high note with a 27-14 victory over Wyoming in a game that had been postponed because of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Both teams will have new coaches when they meet Sept. 13 at Laramie, Wyo. While KU coach Mark Mangino helped build major college powers as an assistant coach at Kansas State and Oklahoma, Wyoming coach Joe Glenn was a successful small-college head coach before making the jump to Division I-A this winter.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have attracted Joe to Wyoming,” athletic director Lee Moon said. “He has won championships on every level he has coached. We set our goal to hire the most qualified individual we could, and a successful head coach if possible. With Joe we reached our goal.”

Glenn, 53, came to Wyoming from Montana, where he won three Big Sky Conference championships in three seasons and guided the Grizzlies to a Division I-AA national championship in 2001. His career record as a head coach is 158-59-1.

He previously coached Northern Colorado, where he directed the Bears to 11 straight winning seasons. The Bears earned five straight trips to the Division II playoffs, and won back-to-back Division II national championships in 1996 and 1997.

Though Wyoming has upgraded its coaching staff, Glenn will have to rebuild with many of the same players who posted a 5-28 record in three seasons under former coach Vic Koenning.

Wyoming has had one of the nation’s top 20 passing attacks in both of the past two seasons, but the Cowboys ranked 107th in rushing offense last year. Senior quarterback Casey Bramlet led the Mountain West with 3,290 yards passing and 24 touchdowns last year when the Cowboys finished 2-10.

The new staff also must upgrade a defense that ranked 114th in total defense with an average of 490.8 yards per game.
