The Lawrence Community Theatre got its start back before most current Kansas University students were born.

With its 2003-2004 season, the theater continues a long tradition of producing a broad range of plays performed by a diverse slice of the community. Students can get involved not only under bright lights onstage, but also behind the scenes with props, costumes, sets, lighting, sound — or even volunteering to bake cookies or tend bar at intermission.

The theater produces six to eight major shows each year. This season begins and ends with musicals — the first chronicles the career of a much-beloved crooner, the last tells the story of famous burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. The musicals bookend comedy, drama and a holiday classic.

Here’s a look at the season through December:

• “My Way…A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” by David Grapes and Todd Olson, Sept. 26-28, Oct. 2-5 and 9-12.

The new musical revue features 56 songs recorded by “Old Blue Eyes.” The list of hits goes on and on. Here are a few: “The Best is Yet to Come, ” “All of Me,” “Chicago,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “I Only Have Eyes for You” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

• “A Wonderful Life,” by Sheldon Harnick and Joe Raposo, Nov. 28-30, Dec. 4-7 and 11-14.

This holiday favorite was adapted from Frank Capra’s film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” It’s the well-known tale of George Bailey and his wonderful life in Bedford Falls.
