Canoe Champ: Dick Plumlee of Lawrence won the Men’s Over 50 solo race at the U.S. Canoe Championships last Sunday on the Allegheny River near Warren, Pa. Plumlee, who turned 50 this year, won the 14-mile race by about two seconds. Plumlee’s highest previous finish was third in the Men’s Over 40 division.

  • Spear Standout: Brian Houle of Lawrence placed 20th in the intermediate boys javelin at the National AAU Junior Olympics Aug. 2 in Miami.

  • Roesler Tops JGC: Chad Roesler carded a 67 for low score in last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Kirk Schneider shot 69 and Randy Conroy 71. In net scoring, Tim Aldrich was low with a 58, followed by Justin Williams 61, Steve Blanchard 63 and Jeff Miller 66.

  • Howards Shine: Monica Howard and Allison Howard, both of Baldwin, medaled at the National AAU Junior Olympics track and field championships Aug. 2 in Detroit. In the U-9 age group, Monica was third in multi-events, fifth in the high jump and 17th in the 1,500-meter run. In the U-11 age group, Allison was fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

  • Phenix Tryouts: Tryouts for next summer’s Lawrence Phenix girls fast-pitch teams will be Sunday at Haskell Indian Nations University’s field. Ages 14-18 will be at 12:30 p.m., U-12 at 1:30 p.m. and U-10 at 3 p.m. Call Nancy Potter at 843-7323.

  • KU Basketball Picnic: The Courtsiders, Kansas University’s women’s basketball booster club, invite the public to its annual picnic to meet the team and coaches. The picnic will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the 4-H Fairgrounds. For reservations, call the KU basketball office at 864-4938.

  • Rebels Tryouts: Tryouts for both the U-12 and U-13 Kansas Rebels 2004 baseball teams will be Saturday. Confirmation calls must be made to 542-2169 (U-12) and 979-4002 (U-13) prior to participation.

  • Baseball School: On-site registration for the Five-Tool Baseball School will begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at Free State High’s field. Players in grades 3 through 12 are eligible. For information, call Mike Hill at 766-4916.

  • Unity Winners: Lawrence’s Justin Riley and Renee Stains won the men’s and women’s portions of last Saturday’s Crosstown Unity Run. In the Masters Division, the age-graded time winners were Dick Wilson of Lawrence and Sue Mowder of Topeka.

  • Heitzman Adds to Total: Paul Heitzman of Eudora captured both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs in the ages 70-74 division of the National Masters Outdoor track and field championships last week in Eugene, Ore. Since becoming a Masters runner, Heitzman has won 49 national championships.

  • Free State Meeting: Parents of Free State High fall sports athletes are invited to an informational meeting at 5 p.m. Friday in the school auditorium. Following will be the annual FSHS Booster Club barbecue.

  • Plowboys Tryouts: Tryouts for the U-9 Kansas Plowboys baseball team will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at the McLouth baseball complex. For information, call Steve Horton at (913) 796-6258.

  • City Champions: Mason Barr, Tim Lewis and Trenton Sheppard of Lawrence were members of the Topeka-based Kansas Outlaws baseball team that won the AAU U-10 Div. II national championship last month in Des Moines, Iowa. The Outlaws finished with a 37-9 record.
