Wichita ? Cessna Aircraft revised its work force reduction numbers again Tuesday, dashing hopes that the company would not lay off as many workers as it had first announced.

The news means 300 additional workers will get 60-day layoff notices by the end of this month. Most of the positions affected will be salaried jobs.

Cessna said the action was necessary to align its work force with lower 2003 and 2004 production schedules.

In March, Cessna announced a seven-week furlough and work force reduction of more than 1,200 employees.

After making about 900 of those layoffs, the company said in May that it was reviewing whether further layoffs would be needed.

Cessna spokeswoman Jessica Myers said the company had been looking at ways to cut costs and improve processes so no additional layoffs were necessary.

“It has taken us some time to know the right adjustment for employment levels,” she said.

Tuesday’s announcement brings the number of layoffs to the original estimate of 1,200.

Cessna now employs 8,300 workers in Wichita and 9,900 workers worldwide.
