Matthew Vincent Anderson graduated June 5 from Harvard University, Cambridge Mass.

Anderson, a graduate of Free State High School, is the son of Corinne D. Anderson and Robert E. Anderson, both of Lawrence.

He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree, with a concentration in classics.

  • Laura Nelson, a 2003 graduate of Free State High School, will receive a cheerleading scholarship for the 2003-2004 academic year at Barton County Community College.

She is the daughter of Nancy Nelson.

  • Richard and Lisa Todd, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Robin Mary Grace Todd, born July 29, 2003, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She has a brother, Reese Todd, 3.

Maternal grandparents are Ken and Mary Lou Gudenkauf, Topeka. Paternal grandparents are the late Ronald and Bernice Todd. Great-grandparents are Gilbert and Mary Helen Schmelzle, Seneca.

  • Francis Denton, Lawrence, will celebrate his 97th birthday on Aug. 14. Cards may be sent to him at 417 N. Mich., Lawrence 66049.
  • Marika Spurgeon, Lawrence, is the recipient of the 2003 Marie Anderson Fitz Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation Scholarship. The foundation awarded the scholarship in recognition of Spurgeon’s high academic achievement, participation in Kappa Alpha Theta activities and involvement in the community.
  • Stuart Bell, son of Dr. and Mrs. Stuart Bell of Lawrence, attended the Cambridge College Programme for three weeks in Cambridge, England. He studied at the Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge. He took the following classes: DNA fingerprinting, Psychology of Law and British Cultural History: Faith, and Power, Learning and Leisure. He also visited notable museums and sights. Stuart will be a sophomore at Lawrence High School.
  • Jennifer Tallman graduated from the University of Louisville in May. She was named to the spring 2003 semester dean’s list by earning at least a 3.25 grade-point average. She is the daughter of Joyce Tallman, Lawrence.
  • Aryenish Birdie, Lawrence, plans to attend Hampshire College, Amherst, Mass. The Lawrence High School graduate is the daughter of Purviz and Tiraz Birdie, Lawrence.
  • MidAmerica Nazarene University, Olathe, announces area students who made honors during the spring 2003 semester.

Students who made the president’s list with a 4.0 grade-point average were Amy Birdsell and Julie Sorge, both of Lawrence. Students who made the dean’s list by earning a 3.5 to 3.99 GPA were Jean Mace, Ottawa, and Amy Barnes and Sarah Mages, Tonganoxie. Students who made the honor roll by earning at least a 3.2 GPA were Jeffrey Breithaupt and Rebekah Vann, Lawrence; Adam Schulz, Ottawa; and Catherine Baker, Stilwell.
