Web site seeks input about May 8 storm

People with disabilities and their families who had problems or concerns in the wake of the May 8 tornado that struck Lawrence have a chance to express them.

A Web site has been set up by Kansas University’s Research and Training Center for Independent Living.

A survey can be found online at independence inc.org.

KU asks that responses to the survey be made by Aug. 31.

KU center’s director to lead national board

Ann Turnbull, co-director of Kansas University’s Beach Center on Disability, has been elected president of the American Association on Mental Retardation.

The association is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary professional organization in the United States that focuses on mental retardation and related disabilities.

Turnbull and her husband, H. Rutherford “Rud” Turnbull, co-direct the Beach Center, which is one of 12 centers affiliated with the Life Span Institute at KU.

Rud Turnbull served as the association’s president from 1985 to 1986.

KU unveils scholarships for Haskell transfers

Students transferring from Haskell Indian Nations University to Kansas University will have a new scholarship option, KU officials announced this week.

The Coca-Cola Foundation has donated $30,000 to KU to offer three scholarships to American Indian students each year. John Scarffe, a spokesman for the KU Endowment Association, said the amounts of the scholarships may vary each year.

This fall’s recipients will be Brian Yazzie, a junior from Fort Defiance, Ariz., Christopher Drymon, a sophomore from Northpoint, Ala., and Felicia Impson, a junior from Supai, Ariz.

Congressman to visit Cottonwood workers

U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., will visit Tuesday with employees at Cottonwood Inc.

Ryun, who represents about half of Lawrence in the 2nd District, will tour the agency’s headquarters at 2801 W. 31st St. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Cottonwood is a provider of employment, residential and support services for people with developmental disabilities in Douglas and Jefferson counties.
