Driver claims motorist fired gunshots at car

Police are investigating a man’s claim that another driver fired gunshots at his car early Monday on West Sixth Street.

According to a report, an officer at the intersection of Sixth and Michigan streets saw two cars — a gray one and a white one — speeding east about 2:30 a.m. He activated his emergency lights and the gray vehicle began to slow, but the white car kept going and he pursued it.

When he stopped the white car in North Lawrence, the car’s passengers told him the driver of the gray car had fired gunshots at them as they passed. The car’s passengers were an 18-year-old Berryton man, two 19-year-olds from Topeka and an 18-year-old North Carolina man.

Police recovered a copper-jacketed lead bullet from the driver’s side door of the car but couldn’t find the gray vehicle, according to a report.
