Robbery suspect chased to Topeka

A Topeka man was arrested Friday night after a south Lawrence store was robbed and a police chase came to an abrupt end in Shawnee County.

Michael L. Sudduth, 49, was being held Sunday in the Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery and fleeing and eluding police, according to jail officials.

About 9:45 p.m. Friday two female employees at Bath and Body Works, 3102 Iowa, were at an outside trash bin when they were approached by a man, according to a police report.

The man ordered the women, both age 20, back into the store and attempted but failed to open a cash register.

The suspect then took a bank deposit bag containing an undetermined amount of money and fled, police said. The store was closed at the time. The employees told police the suspect indicated that he had a weapon but none was seen, police said.

Shortly after police were called, an officer attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation on West Sixth Street. The car did not stop and police chased it west on U.S. Highway 40 to Croco Road on the eastern outskirts of Topeka, police said.

Lawrence Police were assisted by the Kansas Highway Patrol, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and Topeka Police.

At least one tire on the suspect’s car was punctured when covered spikes were thrown into the roadway by officers in an attempt to stop the car, according to police accounts.

The car turned north on Croco Road and came to a stop after a short distance. Police said the driver matched the suspect’s description and money was found inside the car.

Police on Sunday were still compiling reports and no other details were available.

Sudduth was being held on $35,000 bond, jail officials said.
