Cindi Smith has joined The Hawk Sheet magazine as sales and operations manager. She has more than 20 years of experience in sales and marketing. The Hawk Sheet is a weekly advertising magazine.

Debi Waggoner, Lawrence, has been promoted to retail banking officer at Intrust’s Lawrence office. She has been in the banking industry for 30 years.

Dennis Griffin has completed the training needed to become certified as a service adviser. Griffin works at the Jack Ellena Honda dealership in Lawrence. To obtain the certification, Griffin participated in classroom training and an on-the-job self study.

Marilyn Nichols and Sadie Callan, both of Lawrence, were elected as new members to the Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council’s board of directors. Nichols is an instructor and project director at Haskell Indian Nations University. Callan is a junior at Free State High School and is a Senior Girl Scout. She attended the national convention as a delegate in 2002.

Barbara Hughes, Topeka, has been promoted to development manager with Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council. She will coordinate the council’s fund development efforts to support council programs and operations. The Kaw Valley Council serves 13 counties in northeast Kansas, including Douglas County.

Dillons has promoted Laura Burton to floral manager at its Lawrence store at 4701 W. Sixth St. She has worked for Dillons since 2001.

Michael Fillmore, Lawrence, attended the Health-System Pharmacists spring meeting April 10-12 in Wichita. The convention provided pharmacists, pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians with the latest information on a variety of topics. Fillmore, a Kansas University student, is an intern at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He joined the staff in June 2000.

Cindy Maude, president and CEO of Lawrence-based Callahan Creek, announces staff additions and promotions.

Ryan Winter, art director, comes from Southern California, where he was senior designer for Boost Mobile. He will provide branding and design concepts for several major clients.

Curtis Green has joined the agency as a copywriter. Green graduated from Kansas University with a degree in journalism. He was an intern in the agency’s creative department.

Sean Duggan has been promoted to senior art director. Duggan has been an art director with Callahan Creek for three years. J. Chambers, who has been with the company for more than two years, has been promoted to senior copywriter. Sonya Collins received a promotion. She is the assistant art director. Collins has been a production artist for Callahan Creek for three years. She is responsible for developing and executing creative concepts for Callahan Creek.

Leadership Kansas, the leadership development program of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has chosen 35 emerging state leaders for its 2003 class activities. Class members will graduate in October after participating in programs planned throughout Kansas to inform them of key issues facing the state and to inspire them to become activists in creating future solutions.

Area residents chosen as a member of the class are David Johnson, Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, Lawrence; Ann Gardner, Lawrence Journal-World, Lawrence; and Trudy Rice, K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County, Lawrence.

Deciphera Pharmaceuticals, Lawrence, is among the 21 entrepreneurial growth companies from the Midwest that will present their business plans to venture capitalists from around the country at the Fourth Annual Invest/Midwest Venture Capital Forum May 21-22 in Kansas City, Mo. The companies were selected based on a rigorous application and screening process.

The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts has appointed Peter Kimble, 3205 Clinton Parkway Court, and Mehdi Khosh, 2601 W. Sixth St., to the Naturopathic Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is to advise the board in carrying out the provisions of the Naturopathic Doctor Registration Act, which became effective in January 2003.

Honors and awards

Associated Wholesale Grocers of Kansas City, Kan., has named Fred and JoAnn Ball as recipients of the inaugural Lou Fox Community Service Award. The award was presented during the Associated Wholesale Grocers’ annual shareholders meeting on March 16. The Balls were recognized for their lifelong commitment to the Kansas City community.

Fred and JoAnn Ball own and operate 28 Kansas City metro supermarkets under the Hen House and Price Chopper names.

In 2002, Fred Ball received Kansas University’s School of Business Distinguished Alumni Award and the Kansas City Kansas Chamber of Commerce named him “Man of the Year.”

Countrywide Home Loans has presented Jack Gillespie with its prestigious Circle of Excellence Award. Only Countrywide’s top home loan consultants nationwide receive the award, which is given based on overall purchase loan volume. As a home loan consultant, Gillespie is responsible for originating home loans in the Lawrence office.

Cardinal Brands Inc. announced its Cardinal EasyOpen Ring Binders received Staples 2002 “Best Product of the Year” award. The award, given to companies whose products have had the best sales and have expanded their total category in the past year, was presented at the recent annual Staples Contract Sales conference in Miami Beach, Fla. Cardinal Brands operates a corporate office in Lawrence.

Jeffrey Pierce, Lawrence, received the Kansas Society of Health-System Pharmacists Board Award for Innovative Clinical Practice during the society’s spring meeting in Wichita. Pierce, clinical coordinator at Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s pharmacy department, received the award for his poster “Standardization of Order Entry Processes Reduces Medication Errors.” The poster was co-authored by Greg Burger and Patrick Parker.

The 2003 Kansas Tax conference will be May 15 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. The conference covers a number of critical tax topics of special interest to Kansas business people.

Consumer Credit Counseling Services will present “Discover More Dollars” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court in Lawrence.

The workshop will cover financial goal setting, developing a realistic budget, cutting costs, evaluating spending habits and starting a savings plan.

The board of directors for East Kansas Agri-Energy announced that a new series of equity drive meetings has been scheduled in eastern Kansas. The Garnett-based group, which was organized by 122 area agricultural, business and community leaders, is working to build a 20 million-gallon-per-year ethanol production facility.

EKAE seeks to raise about $14.4 million from private investors before seeking commercial financing for the remainder of the $36 million project.
