KU men ousted, but women reach semis

? The Kansas University bowling club had one team advance and one team eliminated Friday at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships.

The favored KU men’s squad beat Central Missouri State, but lost to Western Illinois and San Jose State, falling out of competition.

The women’s squad had no trouble, thumping Central Florida, Florida State and Indiana State to advance to today’s semifinals. The Jayhawks will bowl against Florida State at 9 a.m. for the right to advance to the finals at 3 p.m. against either Wichita State or Central Missouri State.

Florida State will have to beat the Jayhawk women twice to advance.

“They had a fantastic day and really came together,” KU coach Mike Fine said. “The entire team just played unbelievably great.”

Fine said the men’s squad, the top qualifier in the tournament, shouldn’t despair.

“We’ve had a great year, arguably the best we’ve had at KU in a long time,” Fine said. “We’re excited for the women.”

Men’s results: Kansas 4, Central Missouri State 0; Western Illinois 4, Kansas 2; San Jose State 4, Kansas 3.

Women’s results: Kansas 4 1/2, Central Florida 1 1/2; Kansas 4, Florida State 0; Kansas 4, Indiana State 2.
