Small ball lifts Lions

LHS wins in 10

? Lawrence High used some daring baserunning to score four runs in the 10th inning en route to a 5-1 baseball win over Olathe East Tuesday.

The Lions, who were bolstered by the complete-game pitching of Ryan Rowland, used squeeze bunts from Ryan Engle and Kyle McManness to score Spence Chaney and Dominick Harrell respectively with the go-ahead and third runs.

Carl Lisher’s base hit scored Engle and McManness after they stole second and third with the Lions’ final two runs in a four-run 10th.

“It’s something we like to do. We haven’t had the opportunity to do much of it,” LHS coach David Petry said of running. “We had the right people in the right spots to be able to do some things. Ryan and Kyle are two of our better bunters.”

LHS also used its running ability to score its first run in the third inning. Engle, who was on first base, made a move to steal second. Harrell then scored from third when a play was made on the runner at first.

Tommy Mangino went 2-for-5 with a double, while Engle and Harrell had two hits apiece.

Rowland allowed six singles and a double, striking out 11, walking one and allowing no earned runs.

“I was really impressed with Ryan Rowland’s performance. He threw 140-some pitches and still seemed to be pretty strong when he finished the game,” Petry said.

Rowland, in fact, struck out the side in the ninth.

The Lions, 8-1, will meet SM West Thursday at Overland Park 3&2 fields.
