? Lawrence High’s soccer team beat Topeka High, 2-1, Tuesday at the Trojans’ field for Lawrence’s first victory of the season.

Whitney Lopez scored off a pass from Lindsay Garito to erase a 1-0 deficit 27 minutes into the game.

Ten minutes later, Garito took the ball at midfield, beat three players and scored the winning goal.

Center midfielder Aly Barland, sweeper Bess Chatman and defenders Monica Ruiz and Dyana Lawrence were cited for outstanding play.

Lawrence High (1-7-1) will meet Pembroke Hill at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields with a junior varsity game scheduled to follow.

“I would say, in some ways, attacking-wise, it probably was our best game of the year,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “Defensively we had a couple of errors we will work on. I feel good because we’d been playing really well.

“We deserved to win before now. This gives the girls satisfaction that their efforts are worth it. This will build our confidence. It’s typical of these ladies to fight hard until the end.”
