Teenager abducted after parents slain; uncle in custody

? A man who allegedly abducted his teenage niece after killing her parents was arrested Sunday after a high-speed chase and four-hour standoff with police. The 13-year-old girl was released unharmed.

Police said the violence began Saturday night when Robert Hixson shot and killed his wife’s brother, Myron Bilger Jr., and Bilger’s wife, Ellen, after breaking into their Pocono Lakes home. He then allegedly abducted the teenager, Hadley Bilger.

The slain couple’s 5-year-old daughter had been at their home during the shooting and ran to the house of a relative, who alerted authorities, police said. The girls’ father identified Hixson as the shooter before he died, according to Pocono Mountain Regional Police Detective Harry Lewis.

Hixson, 42, wasn’t immediately charged. Police declined to comment on a possible motive but said they did not think an argument preceded the shooting.

“There was no communication, from what I understand. He broke in,” detective Michael Robson said.

Hixson’s truck was spotted by police Sunday morning. Authorities say he then fled, initiating a chase that ended about 45 minutes later when police disabled the tires of his truck in Berks County, about 90 miles southwest of the girl’s home in the Pocono Mountains.

At some point, authorities said, Hixson stopped the car and let the girl out. A statewide Amber Alert was issued for Hadley, who was wearing teddy-bear print pajamas when she was abducted.

Hixson surrendered to police after keeping them at bay for about four hours outside a small food market. Hixson got in and out of his vehicle and at times held a shotgun to his chin, said state police Trooper Raymond J. Albert.

Hixson, who has three sons, had told his wife he was going fishing and dropped her off late Saturday afternoon at her mother’s house in Danville, her mother, Donna Faye Bilger, said Sunday.

When police arrived at Donna Faye Bilger’s house after the killings, they discovered that two of her husband’s weapons, including a shotgun, were missing from a locked cabinet.
