Venturing Crew 2055, chartered to Plymouth Congregational Church of Lawrence, participated in the KANIK Winter Camping Program at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., during spring break. KANIK is a high-adventure program that emphasizes camping in extremely cold conditions. Crew members who attended were Megan Heacock, Jeff Hornberger, Samantha Meyer, Karl McDonald, Josh Cosgrove and Evan Hilpman. They were accompanied by adult leaders Ryan Hornberger, Don Meyer, Lori Tilson, Wayne Tilson and Tim Cosgrove.

Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to the Lawrence Catholic School parent-teacher organization, had its annual Blue & Gold Banquet on Feb. 15. Henry Hodges, Dominick Reiske, Michael Smith and Ethan Vogelsang received the Arrow of Light Award, the highest award in Cub Scouting, and then bridged into Boy Scout Troop 52. Herb Tuttle, assistant scoutmaster of Troop 52, along with Scouts Henry Reiske, Peter Tuttle, Matthew Rogers and David Long, welcomed the boys into their troop.

Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the First United Methodist Church, had several events during the past month.

The troop had a fishing campout March 21-23 at Bromelsick. Scouts who attended were Ethan Vogelsang, Nathan Wycoff, Brandon Mailand, Dominick Reiske, Todd Roberts, Michael Smith, Jack Berkowitz, Justin Wellman, Matthew Rogers, Steve Wilson, David Long, Wesley Hinkle, Brendan Golledge, Doug Rawlings, Ben Bartels, Logan Hinkle, Justin Deaver, Will Sharp and Henry Reiske. David Berkowitz planned the activities. Other adult leaders who attended the campout were Wayne Deaver, Chris Golledge, Nancy Wilson, Glen Sharp, David Bartels and Rob Roberts.

On March 29, boys from Troop 52 attended Sharing Native American Ways, an event put on by the Heart of America Boy Scout Council, as well as the Heart of America and the Greater Kansas City Indian Council. The boys took classes in various American Indian subjects, including cooking, story telling and costuming. Those who attended were Dominick Reiske, Henry Reiske, Tim Barta, Ben Bartels, Pete Bray, Stuart Gillreath, Brendan Golledge, Nick Joseph, Michael Smith, Charlie Turner, Justin Wellman and Steve Wilson. Adult leaders who accompanied them were Wayne Deaver, Tammy Barta and Harry Smith. Justin Deaver and Mason McCurdy helped the SNAWS staff.

Troop 52 had Junior Leader Training April 11-12 at Hidden Valley Camp in Lawrence. Boys who attended the training were Tim Barta, Pete Bray, Asher O’Connor, Ian O’Connor, Michael Davidson, Justin Deaver, Brendan Golledge, Nick Joseph, Alek Joyce, Dwayne LaForce, Brandon Mailand, Mason McCurdy, Dominick Reiske, Henry Reiske, Todd Roberts, Matthew Rogers, Michael Smith, Justin Wellman and Steve Wilson. Adults who helped were Wayne Deaver, Tammy Barta, Chris Golledge, Jim Joyce, Aaron Lathrom, Ralena McCurdy, Sue Reiske, Harry Smith and Rod Zinn.

Troop 52 participated in Scouting for Food on April 7 and April 12. They placed bags on the doors of homes around Haskell Indian Nations University and Broken Arrow School on April 7. They picked up the bags of food and took them to the Salvation Army on April 12.

Pelathe District conducted its annual Scouting for Food drives as its community service project in the Heart of America Council. Scouts from various units participated by placing bags on doors and then returning to retrieve the bags filled with canned goods and nonperishables. The goods were taken to the Salvation Army and distributed to food pantries in Lawrence, Baldwin and Eudora. Packs that participated were 3462, 3071, 3051, 3370, 3057, 3052, 3055, 3077, 3072, 3064 and 3065. Troops that participated were 55, 59, 61, 52, 58, 64 and 65. More than 7,600 pounds of food was collected and distributed.
