Earth Day activities, Easter egg hunt canceled because of rain

Heavy rain and the threat of severe weather caused the cancellation today of nearly all Earth Day Activities and the South Park Easter egg hunt, organizers said.

Canceled were the morning parade through downtown and the afternoon celebration at South Park.

The parade has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. next Saturday, April 26, organizers said. The afternoon Earth Day celebration may be rescheduled if a park for the activities can be found. It may have to be moved from South Park, organizer Shane McCall said.

Indoor activities in conjunction with Earth Day are continuing at the Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper. Activities include a 10:30 a.m. Eagle demonstration, a 1 p.m. program about endangered species and a 3 p.m. program on wildlife rehabilitation. Other activities will be going on throughout the day, a spokeswoman at the center said.

Also falling victim to the weather is this afternoon’s Lawrence Parks and Recreation and Hy-Vee Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza at South Park.

Children ages 5 to 12 who were planning to participate in the egg hunt can still get an Eggstravaganza bag at Lawrence’s Hy-Vee stores. The bags will be given out today to the first 1,000 children, organizer Duane Peterson said.
