LHS routs Raiders

Lions improve to 7-0 with 12-2 whipping

? Lawrence High ripped 11 hits and starting pitcher Taylor Martin had nine strikeouts and just one walk in the Lions’ 12-2, six-inning baseball victory Tuesday over Shawnee Mission South at 3&2 fields.

“I was real happy to see Taylor Martin get on track,” LHS coach David Petry said. “I thought tonight he pitched more like he did last year for us. He struggled a little bit in his first two starts for us this year. Tonight he did a good job of keeping the ball down and getting ahead of hitters.”

The Lions improved to 7-0.

“It’s nice, but I think our kids realize there’s still a lot of season left,” Petry said. “We feel real good about being 7-0 right now and are happy with the way we’ve been playing, but we realize we have to get better. This was just our second league game. It will be tough to keep that going when you play in the Sunflower League.”

Tommy Mangino had two of the Lions’ five extra-base hits with a double and one of three LHS triples.

Ryan Rowland and Dominick Harrell also had three-baggers; Harrell had a pair of RBIs.

“I’m real happy with how our offense has been hitting the last five games. We’ve been hitting the ball well,” Petry said. “We had one error defensively tonight. Defensively we played well, and we had good pitching. So really we were solid in all three phases of the game.”
