Hiram D. ‘Bud’ Elder

? Services for Hiram D. “Bud” Elder, 56, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

Mr. Elder died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at his home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1946, in Ottawa, the son of John Calvert and Anita “Loraine” (Browning) Elder. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1964, attended Pittsburg State University, graduated from Commercial Trade Institute with a degree in heating and cooling, then graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Academy in 1974. He also attended military schools while serving in the Kansas Army National Guard. He was a lifelong resident of Ottawa.

Mr. Elder served with the National Guard from Jan. 31, 1966, until he retired as a staff sergeant from Service Battery 1st Battalion 127th Field Artillery in Garnett in 1991. He worked for McArdle’s Refrigeration in Ottawa from 1971 to 1973 and was an officer for Ottawa Department of Public Safety from 1974 to 1978. He returned to McArdle’s and bought the business in 1985, changing the name to Elder’s Cooling & Heating. He sold the business in 1993 and worked for the new owners until going to Cloud Heating & Air-Conditioning in Lawrence, where he worked from 1996 until 2001. He was a security guard for Ree’s Contract Service from 2001 until his death. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ottawa Promenaders and a former member of Franklin County Sheriff Reserves.

He married Carolyn Ann Ralston on Sept. 25, 1965, in Ottawa. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Trisha Lynn Kaub and Tori Sue Wilson, both of Ottawa, and Traci Ann Martin, Odessa, Texas; his parents, Ottawa, and eight grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. today until the service hour at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
