Chancellor won’t share new cuts right away

Lincoln, Neb. — University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman is waiting on the Legislature before announcing more proposed budget cuts.

Perlman has already announced one-third of what would have to be cut under a 10 percent reduction in state funding. He had planned to make more cut announcements this week.

But in an e-mail to university faculty and staff sent Monday, Perlman said no more announcements will be made until after the state budget comes into better focus.

“I do not want to announce cuts that ultimately might not have to be made,” Perlman said.

Given that the state budget may not be passed until early June, and the NU Board of Regents will not approve a budget for the university until June 7, any additional cuts may not be announced until the summer, Perlman said.

Under Johanns’ budget, the university faces a 10 percent cut in state funding over the next two years. The Legislature’s Appropriations Committee has tentatively lowered that to a 3 percent cut.
