County approves ‘Wild West Days’

A re-enactment of life in the Wild West — but including cake walks and portable toilets — is coming later this month to rural Douglas County.

Douglas County commissioners approved a temporary business permit Wednesday night for “Wild West Days,” to be conducted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26 at Coal Creek Farms, 1676 N. 1000 Road, southeast of Lawrence.

Rick Andrews, who applied for the permit, said the one-day event would provide two re-enactments of the Wild West by the Santa Fe Desperados, plus open trails for riding and access to horse and feed vendors. The event also will include hay rides, horse rides, cake walks and a “bonfire lunch.”

Access to the event will be available off North 1000 Road, which is paved.

“We’re all excited,” said Commissioner Jere McElhaney, who lives near the 174-acre site, 25 acres of which will be available for event parking.

Security services will be handled by off-duty police officers and county sheriff’s deputies. Also, some of the Santa Fe Desperados are officers with the Gardner Police Department.

Alcohol will not be served.
