The Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of a measure to support embattled Kansas University professor Dennis Dailey.

Dailey’s class on human sexuality was the reason for a budget amendment passed by the Kansas Legislature that orders the Board of Regents to rescind funding for any department caught showing obscene videos.

Legislators acted based on the complaint of one anonymous student. Dozens of other students in the class have come to Dailey’s defense.

Retired Kansas University professor Herman Leon asked city commissioners Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in support of a veto of the budget amendment. Commissioners agreed.

“We’ll ask the governor to ensure that the academic curriculum of the university be respected,” Mayor David Dunfield said.

The letter could be sent as soon as today.

The move came the same day that students in the class sent an e-mail to Sebelius’ office Tuesday, seeking a meeting with the governor to dispute reports about Dailey’s class.

Sebelius’ office has said she was willing to meet the students.
