Bernstein interview still a hot topic
One day later, Kansas University men’s basketball coach Roy Williams still has few regrets over his now-notorious interview with CBS reporter Bonnie Bernstein.
“I regret one word,” Williams said. “I don’t regret the rest of it.”
Just moments after KU lost the national-championship game, 81-78 to Syracuse, Bernstein asked Williams about the North Carolina coaching vacancy. After answering the question, Bernstein followed up with a similar question, causing Williams temporarily to lose his cool.
“I could give a (expletive) about North Carolina right now,” Williams told Bernstein on live national television. “I’ve got 13 kids in that locker room that I love.”
Bernstein said on ESPN Radio’s “Dan Patrick Show” she warned Williams she would bring up the North Carolina vacancy.
“I said, ‘Look, I know you’re in a tough situation, but I hope you understand, I do need to talk to you about Carolina,'” Bernstein said on the show. “And he understood. He kind of knew it was coming.”
Williams said Tuesday he had no problem with Bernstein asking the question once, but it was her follow-up question that irritated him.
“If I had to do it all over again, I would say almost the same exact thing,” Williams said. “I would probably substitute the word ‘darn’ for another word I used.
