SM East keeps frigid Lions winless in 3-0 shutout

At least someone enjoyed the shivering conditions at the Lawrence High girls soccer team’s 3-0 loss Monday to Shawnee Mission East.

LHS coach Keith Nelson said his team played its best running straight into the chilly breeze.

“I don’t think the conditions had an effect on the outcome, in my opinion. I’m actually glad for the conditions,” Nelson said. “We played our best half going into the wind. That’s going to give us confidence knowing we can play like that against such a good team.”

The Lancers (1-1) scored in the 29th minute, when sophomore Kaylin Hertel bounced a kick past LHS junior keeper Shannon Fisher.

“I thought both teams played well considering the conditions,” SM East coach Jim Ricker said. “We were hoping if we could score one in the first half, we could seal it in the second.”

That’s exactly what happened. After dodging an early LHS scoring threat in the first minute of the second half, SM East turned up its offense.

Senior Amy Holst spearheaded the Lancer attack, at times splitting the Lion defense at will. It paid off in the 20th minute of the second half, when Holst’s close-range kick found the right side of the net.

“You never can stop a great player. You just hope to contain her,” Nelson said of Holst.

Fisher played solidly, but couldn’t stifle the Lancers’ flurry of shots. Hertel iced the outcome 15 minutes later with her second goal, deflecting a high kick off Fisher’s sprawling arms.

Despite seeing his club shut out LHS, Ricker predicted the Lions (0-3) eventually would fare well in the Sunflower League.

“He’s (Nelson) got a very young team,” Ricker said. “They’re going to be dangerous in a year.”

The Lions travel Thursday to Leavenworth.
