Waters’ throw second-best at KU

? Kansas University senior Jamie Waters’ hammer throw was the highlight for the KU track and field team Thursday during the second day of the Texas Relays.

Waters’ distance of 169-93/4 was the second-best mark in Kansas school history.

Representing the KU men were sophomores Brandon Hodges and Jeremy Mims, freshman Cameron Schwehr and senior Derec Lacio in the 4×800 meter relay, and senior Mark Menefee and freshman Benson Chesang in the 5,000.

Freshman Angela Pichardo, sophomore Megan Manthe, junior Laura Lavoie and sophomore Kim Clark made up the KU women’s 4x800m relay team. KU sophomore Lauren Brownrigg competed in the 5,000, and senior Jamie Waters threw the hammer.

The men’s relay team finished sixth (7:36.37) among 18 teams and the women’s relay was third (8:53.36) out of 11.

Menefee (14:36.51) and Chesang (14:40.33) finished 3-4 in the 5,000 run out of 27 competitors, and Brownrigg came in 14th among 20 competitors (18:14.90).

The four-day event at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium concludes Saturday.
