Wrigley Field could be designated landmark

Chicago — The Commission on Chicago Landmarks recommended the Chicago City Council designate Wrigley Field a landmark Thursday.

The commission made its decision after reviewing a proposal from the city’s Department of Planning and Development.

The department recommended designating key architectural features of the Cubs’ home ballpark, including the center field scoreboard, marquee and ivy-covered walls.

Dodgers activate Mota

San Diego — The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-hander Guillermo Mota Thursday after he served his four-game suspension for hitting the New York Mets’ Mike Piazza with a pitch March 12. The Dodgers made the move following their 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Tigers claim Walker, option him to Toledo

Detroit — The Detroit Tigers claimed right-hander Tyler Walker off waivers Thursday from the New York Mets and optioned him to Triple-A Toledo.

Walker played for the Mets and Triple-A Norfolk in the 2002 season. In five appearances for the Mets, Walker went 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA. In 28 games for Norfolk, he was 10-5 with a 3.99 ERA.

Walker signed as the Mets second-round selection in the June 1997 draft, Walker is 39-32 with a 3.76 ERA in 137 games in six minor-league seasons.

Rivera throws off mound

Tampa, Fla. — New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera reported no problems after throwing 30 pitches Thursday as he works his way back from a groin injury. Rivera injured himself the final week of spring training and started the season on the disabled list.
