Firebirds rout another foe

FSHS wins third straight baseball game

? Free State High’s baseball team posted its second 13-0 victory in as many days, hammering Pembroke Hill Tuesday in a five-inning game.

The Firebirds (3-0) used three pitchers as seniors Blake Dickson, Nate Burman and Jake Hoover combined for the shutout. FSHS coach Mike Hill said Dickson looked sharp in his debut, and probably could have pitched all five innings, but didn’t want to tire him before games Friday and Saturday in Claremore, Okla.

“We’re trying to get the rotations set up for this weekend, so we didn’t want to go the distance with Blake,” said Hill, whose team beat Shawnee Mission South 13-0 Monday in Overland Park. “”I thought he did a pretty nice job. His command of his second pitch was good, that was a nice positive for us.”

Senior David Allen went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while junior Ryne Price was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and four RBIs.

Hill said the last two games — both 13-0 wins — have been fun, but part of him wishes the games could have gone a full seven innings.

“Really, these first couple games you’re trying to figure things out about your club,” Hill said. “For us, we’re trying to figure out who we’re gonna have on the mound this weekend. We’re certainly not complaining about that — we’ll take (the wins) any time, but we’d like some work in too.”

The Firebirds play Claremore at noon Friday.
