Technical problems delayed election results

Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes said “technical problems” caused delays Tuesday night in reporting election results from the Douglas County Courthouse.

The first results didn’t come until about 9:30 p.m., or about two hours later than what had been expected.

“The technician put the wrong chips in the machine after he finished the test,” Jaimes said about 8:55 p.m. Tuesday.

Jaimes said she realized there was a problem when the counting machines in the county commission chambers were not communicating with the computer that does the vote tallying. About half of the ballots had been fed through the machines before the problem was discovered, she said.

As soon as new chips are put into the counting machines, the ballots began being counted, she said.

County Commissioner Charles Jones asked those who were at the courthouse to gather into the commission chambers about 9:10 p.m., so Jaimes could explain the delay.

Worried about the problems of getting the information displayed through a new computer projection screen set up at the rotunda in the county courthouse, Jaimes had county election workers bring out some old hand vote tally boards.

Usually by this time of the election night, election results would have been over.
