Juanita B. Strait

She was born Oct. 29, 1908, in Neodesha, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Hall) White. She spent her childhood years there before graduating from Ottawa University with a bachelor of arts degree in music.

Mrs. Strait and her husband lived in Belle Plain, Kinsley and Chanute as well as Lawrence.

Mrs. Strait taught in the Navy V-12 program at Kansas University during World War II. She gave private piano lessons to two generations of students and was choir director at the First Christian Church for 32 years. She was also the past president of the Lawrence Music Club and a member of Chapter EA PEO, Adah Chapter No. 7 O.E.S., the University Women’s Club, KU Education Wives and Sigma Kappa Sorority.

She was the first patroness of Sigma Alpha Iota on the KU campus and was a member of the KU Retiree Club and the Chancellor’s Club. In 2000, she was inducted into the KU Women’s Hall of Fame.

She married Reginald R. Strait on July 25, 1927. He died in 1979.
