Hot weather sears Lawrence area

If you feel a little uncomfortable outside this afternoon, there’s a reason  it hasn’t been this hot on a September 30th for half a century.

Monday’s forecast calls for a high of 92. The last time it was that hot was back in 1952, said Matt Maken, 6News meteorologist.

Makens said Monday night’s weather will be mild, although not as stuffy as Sunday night, with a low of 67.

Tuesday’s high will reach 90, with clouds increasing Tuesday night, he said.

“We have a rain chance for Wednesday. It will be much cooler on Wednesday with highs in the mid 70s. We will be in the mid to lower 70s to finish off the week,” he said.

The month of September was very dry. Only 0.9 of an inch fell during September, compared to the average of 4.54 inches for the month.

“That kind of makes for a dry year,” he said. “We are at 21.57 inches, while the normal is 32.01 inches. So we’re a little more than 10 inches below what we should be for the year.”
