NAACP honors former Lawrence teacher

The NAACP branch of Kansas City, Kan., honored a former Lawrence resident Friday at its annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Reardon Center.

Jesse Milan, Kansas City, Kan., won the Robert E. Powell Civil Rights Award.

Milan is president of the Kansas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Hired in the late 1950s, he was the first black public school teacher in Lawrence.

Others honored were The Rev. Ervin Sims Jr., Gloria A. Willis, the late Kenneth C. Groves and Clyde Townsend.
