Chiefs-Dolphins reunion for ex-Longhorns Williams, Holmes

? Once they were Texas teammates in a backfield ablaze with talent.

But when Priest Holmes came into the NFL, he was merely an undrafted free agent. His future clouded by a serious knee injury, nobody expected much.

Ricky Williams, in contrast, carted a Heisman Trophy out of Austin. He was the fifth player taken overall. When the New Orleans Saints traded practically their entire draft to move up and nab him, much was expected from Williams. Perhaps too much.

After these two old teammates took very different paths to the NFL, they’ll again be back on the same field today, bunched just as closely together on the NFL rushing charts as when they shared carries for the Longhorns.

Williams, in his first season with Miami tops the league with 394 yards rushing, a major reason the Dolphins are 3-0.

Holmes, who won the rushing title a year ago in his first season in Kansas City, is No. 2 with eight fewer yards than his old friend.

“It’s going to be a test to see whose defense can hold the running game down,” said Miami defensive end Jason Taylor. “It should be about a 212-hour game.”

Make no mistake, the Chiefs’ overriding concern is winning. A loss would plunge them to 1-3 and probably spell doom in the AFC West, whose three other teams went into the weekend with a collective 8-0 record.
