The winners will be recognized at the Phoenix Awards Ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Local artist Jan Gaumnitz created the 2002 Phoenix Award, shown above. The body of the pot is shades of light blue to symbolize the horizon flowing upward to the intensity of a brilliant blue sky, Gaumnitz said. Gaumnitz said she wanted to follow the Olympic tradition of awarding “the gold” for highest achievement by adhering 23-carat gold to the interior of the pot. Gaumnitz chose to gold leaf the inside to emphasize the “container” function of pottery.
