Deadline looms for Phoenix Awards

The deadline for submitting nominations to the Seventh Annual Phoenix Awards is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Categories include musical arts; visual arts; performing arts; arts education; literary arts; arts volunteer; and Phoenix Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement.

Nomination forms are available at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Public Library and online at www.lawrenceks.org/. The winners will be recognized at the Phoenix Awards Ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Local artist Jan Gaumnitz created the 2002 Phoenix Award, shown above. The body of the pot is shades of light blue to symbolize the horizon flowing upward to the intensity of a brilliant blue sky, Gaumnitz said. Gaumnitz said she wanted to follow the Olympic tradition of awarding “the gold” for highest achievement by adhering 23-carat gold to the interior of the pot. Gaumnitz chose to gold leaf the inside to emphasize the “container” function of pottery.

Divine Winefest to celebrate anniversary

The Divine Winefest, the largest fundraiser for the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center at Kansas University, will celebrate its 10th anniversary Saturday at the Kansas City Conference Center, 201 W. 14th Street.

The event, which expects to draw 1,000 alumni, parents and friends of the center, kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

Glazer’s Midwest, an area purveyor of wines, has designated the Divine Winefest as its signature event for 2002. More than 20 domestic wine producer sand importers will be represented. The event will be catered by the Hereford House.

In addition to the wine tasting, the event will feature a silent and live auction.

Baker theater students to offer first tour

Baldwin The Heart of America Performing Arts will offer its first Students-to-Students tour Monday-Oct. 11. The troupe, made of Baker University theater students, will target elementary through high school students within a 50-mile radius of Baldwin.

The group will present two works: “Stuart Little to students up to fourth grade, Monday-Oct. 5; and “Bang, Bang, You’re Dead” to students in grades 7-12, Oct. 3-11.

In addition to performing at the schools, the troupe will present “Stuart Little” at 7:30 p.m. and “Bang, Bang, You’re Dead” at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3-5 in Darby-Hope Theater at Baker University. The shows are free.
