Baker plans homecoming ceremonies

? Baker University will name its new press box in honor of Lawrence’s Tom Hedrick during ceremonies at the school’s homecoming game on Oct. 26.

Hedrick, a BU graduate, has broadcast football, basketball and baseball at Kansas University. Currently, he’s the radio voice of Wildcat football.

Baker will also induct three former student athletes into its Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the 2 p.m. kickoff against MidAmerica Nazarene.

The three honorees are:

George LaFrance, a former MVP in the Arena Football League who was a starting wide receiver on the BU team that played in the NAIA Div. II championship game in 1986.

Cecil Pryor, a 1929 graduate who earned letters in football and track and coached in the high school ranks at Corning and Fredonia. He died in 1967.

Charles Mansfield, a four-year letterman in football and a three-time all-conference selection who also played basketball for the Wildcats. A 1961 grad, Mansfield later became BU’s head basketball coach.

In addition, Doris Peterson, a former professor of physical education, will be inducted. She designed, organized and sponsored all activities of the Woman’s Athletic Association (WAA) before intercollegiate competition for female athletes existed at Baker.

The 1992 championship baseball team will also be recognized on that weekend. Also, after a 30-year absence, Baker will bring back a homecoming parade. It’s scheduled in the morning after the induction ceremonies.

Lindenwood on tap

Off to a 1-2 start, Baker has displayed a willing spirit, but an inability to overcome mistakes.

“I like the effort,” BU coach John Frangoulis said after Saturday’s 31-13 road loss to Culver-Stockton. “These kids came to play. We just need to cut down on mental mistakes.”

The Wildcats will play host to Lindenwood today in another Heart of America Conference clash. Kickoff will be 7 p.m. at Liston Stadium.

“They are young,” Frangoulis said, “but they have some athletes.”
