Hollywood legend Cary Grant honored

He was a legend in Hollywood as well the rest of the world.

Debonair, charming and suave, Cary Grant, who appeared in more than 70 films, was the epitome of the sophisticated actor.

Again his handsome face is projected to a wide audience. This time on a new 37-cent U.S. stamp in the “Legends of Hollywood” series. Born Archibald Leach in Bristol, England, on Jan. 18, 1904, he began his acting career as a teenager, and came to the United States in 1920. In 1932, he changed his name to Cary Grant and played in his first feature film “This Is the Night.”

From that time on he became best-known for his romantic comedies, starring with some of the screen’s leading ladies, including Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman.

The eighth stamp in the “Legends of Hollywood” series features a painting of Grant from a black and white publicity photo made in the early ’50s by Warner Bros. photographer Bert Six. The artist for the new stamp is Michael J. Deas.

Grant died in Davenport, Iowa, on Nov. 29, 1986, at the age of 82 while on a speaking tour.

The new stamp will be released Oct. 15 in Hollywood and will be available elsewhere starting Oct. 16. The Stamp Fulfillment Services of the U.S. Postal Service offers first-day covers. Call (800) STAMP-24.
