Strands, 203 W. Eighth St., has announced Lynn Kelley, Lawrence, has joined its staff as a hair stylist.

The Atchison Casting Corp., Atchison, has announced Vladimir Rada and Stanley Atkins have joined its board of directors. Rada, 48, has been a charter member and partner in Skoforge and served as executive and director of both Skoda Steel and Skoda. Atkins, 60, is president of Highland Sales Group and Omega Business Development.

Wichita-based Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America Inc. recently elected officers and members of the board of trustees for 2003. Officers elected were: The Rev. Robert Docherty, chairman; J. Fred Kubik, vice chairman; the Rev. John Williams, Synod executive; William Ward Jr., president/CEO; Doug Yoder, vice president of operations; Bruce Shogren, chief financial officer/treasurer; and Sherry Cole, corporate secretary.

Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has a retirement community in Lawrence.

Jeff King, Lawrence, has joined Lathrop & Gage as an associate in the Overland Park office. He plans to concentrate his practice in business litigation. He received his juris doctorate from Yale University’s School of Law in 2002.

Dr. Matthew Lewis recently joined the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department as medical consultant. Lewis graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1997 and completed his residency in 2000 at Swedish Family Medicine in Seattle. He worked at the Everett Acute Care Clinic in Everett, Wash., and completed a staff fellowship in medical education with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Lewis also is a staff member at First Med Acute Care and Family Practice Clinic in Lawrence.

David Bunker has been appointed vice president and commercial banking officer for Commercial Federal Bank in the Kansas City region. He is responsible for business development and commercial real estate loan origination in the Kansas City region. He previously was senior vice president at US Bank in Lawrence, where he had worked since 1980.

Doug Wendel, Andy Hause, Ann Hause and Sureva Towler have joined the staff at Kansas University’s Lied Center.

Wendel, technical director, received a master’s degree at KU in 1999. As technical director, he determines the technical and budgetary needs of performing artists on the Lied Series as well as organizations that rent Lied Center facilities. Wendel also leads work crews in the execution of lighting, sound and other technical requirements of visiting performers. He served as technical director of Hoch Auditorium at KU from 1997 to 2002.

Andy Hause, associate technical director, received a degree in technical theater from KU in 1999. His responsibilities include leading students in projects and maintaining equipment. He directs rigging, lighting, scenery and sound crews during performances. Hause has served as technical director at the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was associate technical director at the Lied Center from 1999 to 2001.

Ann Hause, assistant technical director, graduated from KU in a master’s degree in fine arts. She oversees the lighting needs of the Lied Center. She also oversees the hiring and scheduling of technical crew members and assists the associate technical director with rigging, scenery and sound. Hause has worked with University Theatre at KU.

Towler is the new grants manager. She previously worked in nonprofit management in Steamboat Springs, Colo. She is the author of seven books on the history of Northwest Colorado. She is a member of KU’s Hall Center’s Life Writers. She was raised in Washington, D.C., where she served as director of publications for the National Endowment for the Arts and director of publications for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Hotz Business Solutions, 711 W. 23rd St., recently played host to an open house to celebrate its 66th anniversary. During the open house, the company awarded two tickets to a Kansas City Chiefs game to Tennille Wingert of Huxtable and Associates, Lawrence.

The 24th annual Kansas Beef Expo will be Dec. 13-15 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The event will feature high quality seed stock from multiple breeds and the finest beef cattle genetics. Bruce Fraser will give a presentation on capturing digital images, editing and output printing strategies from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 4 in room 233 of the General Education Building at Johnson County Community College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Steve Shields, executive director of Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, will participate in a live Webcast on the Pioneer Network by the federal government’s Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services. The broadcast will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. Friday at cms.internetstreaming.com.

Shields will discuss the process of “Developing Neighborhoods in a Nursing Home.” The broadcast will be a live question-and-answer session between CMS and the audience of surveyors, nurses, long-term care providers and others.

The 20th annual Kansas University School of Business Career Fair will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Kansas Union. The annual event brings together KU students and potential employers from throughout the nation. All students, of any year or major, can attend the fair and learn more about job opportunities.

David Libby, recruitment coordinator for the School of Business, said about 100 companies will be represented at this year’s fair.

Members of the Lawrence Junior Achievement board of directors are currently seeking lane sponsors for their annual Bowlathon on Oct. 18-20 at Royal Crest Lanes.

Lane sponsors will have their company name and logo displayed during the three-day event that is expected to draw nearly 1,000 participants representing about 50 Lawrence firms.

“We’re halfway to our goal of securing 30 sponsors,” said JA board chair Debra Black of University National Bank. “This is our big fund-raiser of the year and we appreciate everyone’s support.”

Last year, scores of volunteers taught Junior Achievement courses stressing business and economics in more than 175 elementary and junior high classrooms in Lawrence and Eudora public schools.
