Free State tennis quad rained out

After one of the driest summers on record, it’s odd that it rained on the only home quadrangular for Free State High’s tennis team.

The Firebirds, playing host to Shawnee Mission East, Blue Valley Northwest and Overland Park Aquinas, completed one round Thursday before the quad was delayed because of rain. It will be completed Oct. 3, starting at 3 p.m.

Free State's Lacey Luina, left, and Emily Loewen celebrate a point.

“I wanted to try and get the second round in so not everybody had to come back,” FSHS coach Jon Renberger said.

Free State split in its matches against Aquinas, but most matches against East were only in the second or third game.

The Firebirds’ No. 1 doubles team of Emily Loewen and Lacey Luina cruised against the Saints, beating Missy Geha and Amy Mitts 8-1.

Firebirds Rachel Koch and Ellie Ott lost at No. 2 doubles, while Marisa Steinbach lost at No. 2 singles.

The best match of the day came at No. 1 singles, where FSHS senior Emily Wang, the defending state champion, edged Aquinas’ Shannon Brown, fifth last year, 9-7.

Lions volleyball goes 2-1

Overland Park Lawrence High’s volleyball team went 2-1 at a quadrangular Thursday at Shawnee Mission North.

The Lions beat SM West, 4-15, 15-9, 15-2, and Blue Valley, 15-3, 15-5, and lost to SM North, 8-15, 2-15. LHS beat Blue Valley, 15-3, 15-5.

Senior Kristen Byington came off the bench and was cited for strong work as setter.

“We started the night slow, losing to SM West, then we responded the next two,” LHS coach Jo Huntsinger said. “Against SM North we played better than we’ve ever played.”

FSHS volleyball 1-2

The Free State High volleyball team dropped to 3-7 overall after going 1-2 at the Shawnee Mission East quadrangular Thursday in Prairie Village.

The Firebirds won the first game against the host Lancers, but lost 15-7, 15-4, 15-11. They then defeated Gardner-Edgerton, 15-7, 15-12, but lost to Olathe South, 15-6, 15-3.

“We’re consistently improving but we’re not consistent through an entire match,” FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said.

FSHS soccer wins

Overland Park After the Free State High and Shawnee Mission East High boys’ soccer teams combined for two goals in the first 74 minutes of Thursday’s game, the teams scored three in the final six minutes.

Two of the goals were by the Firebirds, who left the Shawnee Mission District Complex with a 3-2 victory.

“It was a pretty exciting game with three goals in the last six minutes between us,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said.

Free State’s Joe Angelone scored the first goal 20 minutes in.

The Lancers tied the game with 25 minutes remaining, but Angelone scored again 19 minutes later off a pass from Zak Sears.

SM East again tied the game with a penalty kick with just under three minutes left, but Kayvon Sarraf scored the game winner for Free State (3-1-1) off an assist by Bryan Spangler.

FSHS gymnastics wins

Emporia Free State’s Lacey Baxter won every event, and the Firebirds edged Emporia, 93.5 points to 92, in a high school gymnastics dual Thursday at EHS.
