Cross Town Tavern reports burglary

A cash register was taken from an east Lawrence bar during a reported burglary early Tuesday.

Sometime between 4 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. someone forced open the rear door to the Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave., Lawrence Police said.

A tavern employee discovered the break-in and also noticed a cash register was missing, police said. No money was in the register, officers were told by the employee.

The cash register was valued at $250. Damage to the door was listed at $1,000.

Downed power line delays highway traffic

Traffic was stopped for about 90 minutes Thursday morning because of a downed power line on U.S. Highway 24 near Williamstown.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers stopped traffic on Highway 24 from Midland Junction to near the U.S. Highway 59 junction, dispatchers said.

Jefferson County dispatchers said they had received a report about 5 a.m. of a utility pole fire. The Williamstown Rural Fire Department responded. The highway was reopened before 7 a.m.

VFW to remember POWs, missing soldiers

A ceremony today at the Lawrence Veterans of Foreign Wars post will honor POWs and MIAs. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Post No. 852’s headquarters, 138 Ala.

The POW-MIA ceremony will recognize those who have been missing for some 33 years with a balloon release and a reading of the city and state’s proclamation of today as POW-MIA Day in Kansas.
