Warfield staying cool at hot spot

? Watching Patrick Johnson churn 79 yards to the end zone, Eric Warfield just wanted to forget the play.

Though Warfield wasn’t the only man who failed in Kansas City’s 23-16 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday but he’s the one most fans are pointing at.

“I made a stupid attempt to try to knock a ball down when I probably should have just made a tackle,” Warfield said Wednesday as the Chiefs (1-1) prepared for Sunday’s game at Super Bowl champion New England.

“But that game’s over with and I’ve got to move on from there.”

A second-year starter, Warfield and first-year starting cornerback William Bartee are both off to a shaky beginning to the season.

In the opener at Cleveland, backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb passed for more than 300 yards. Jacksonville’s Mark Brunell burned them for 320, including the team-record 79-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Warfield’s confidence, he insists, has not been dented.

“If you can’t maintain an even keel, you’re not going to make it,” he said.

“If I was to go out there and my confidence dropped into a hole, there’s no telling where I would be at right now. It’s something you have to do. If you can’t, then there’s no way you can play in this league.”
