North Lawrence business reports overnight burglary

A cash register was taken Monday night or early Tuesday in a burglary at a Lawrence business, police said.

An employee at Back to the Garden, a yard art store at 619 N. Second St., discovered the burglary about 8 a.m. Tuesday. Someone had forced open the front door.

Police said it appeared the store’s office area had been searched by the intruder.

The cash register, including cash it contained, amounted to an $800 loss, police said. Also taken was another $500, police said. Damage to the door and a filing cabinet was listed at $670.

Police continue to investigate the thefts.

Lawrence High School plans homecoming parade

The homecoming parade Friday for Lawrence High School will set Massachusetts Street ablaze with sound.

Musicians, floats and at least one cowboy on horseback will depart at 2:30 p.m. from the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

They’ll travel south to Babcock Place, where the band will perform briefly for elderly residents.

The parade route turns west at 19th Street and ends at LHS.

Camper dies after collapse

A Lawrence woman who collapsed Wednesday while camping at Clinton Lake State Park later died at a Topeka hospital, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Mayme Borton, 31, had been talking with a relative at a campground when she suddenly collapsed, Undersheriff Bill Shepard said. There was no evidence of foul play, he said.

Parks assistant director to retire after 18 years

Tom Wilkerson, the longtime assistant director of Lawrence Parks and Recreation, announced Wednesday he would retire in November.

Wilkerson has worked for the city for 18 years. His last day is Nov. 15.
