Cowboys’ Allen sprains left ankle

Larry Allen, the Cowboys’ perennial All-Pro lineman, sprained his left ankle during Dallas’ 21-13 victory over Tennessee on Sunday.

Allen, a 6-foot-3, 335-pound player in his 10th year, was hurt late in the second quarter. He tried to return but then came out again.

Dallas strong safety Tony Dixon also was hurt, leaving in the first quarter with a hamstring problem.

A week after losing defensive end Jevon Kearse with a broken foot, the Titans briefly were without quarterback Steve McNair, who had a mild concussion in the second quarter.

McNair came back in the third quarter, but he finished only 10-of-38 for 226 yards and an interception. His only TD pass, to Frank Wycheck, came in the first quarter.

Also for Tennessee, Kevin Dyson hurt his hamstring, and defensive lineman Robaire Smith hyperextended his elbow.

The Dolphins were hit hard by injuries Sunday, losing linebacker Twan Russell and cornerback Patrick Surtain with sprained left knees in a 21-13 victory at Indianapolis.

Other injuries around the league included Buccaneers tight end Ken Dilger, who hurt a triceps muscle. Ravens offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden left in the third quarter of the Bucs’ 25-0 over Baltimore with a mild concussion.

In the Saints’ win over Green Bay, Packers running back Ahman Green left with a right knee injury, and right tackle Mark Tauscher left with a sprained left knee. New Orleans defensive end Darren Howard sprained his left shoulder, Keyou Craver injured his right knee and running back Fred McAfee hurt his right hamstring.

San Diego’s Pro Bowl defensive end, Marcellus Wiley, sprained an ankle.

Chargers tight end Stephen Alexander had a concussion, while kick returner Tamarick Vanover left with bruised ribs, cornerback Tay Cody had an ankle sprain and guard Bob Hallen had a strained groin.
