Tongie holds off Bonner, 21-7

? Troy Morando threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Tonganoxie slogged its way to a 21-7 high school football victory on a rainy Friday night.

“It rained a lot, but we didn’t care,” THS coach Mark Elston said. “We were glad. With their speed, we were hoping for rain to keep ’em contained. As slow as we are, it didn’t bother us.”

Tongie (1-1) bolted to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Morando threw a 31-yard TD pass to Kyle Mayse, then Morando rushed 14 yards for another score.

Bonner (1-1) pulled within a TD on Phillip Henry’s 23-yard pass from Aaron Weathers, but Billy Baska scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter to set the margin.

Neither team scored in the second half.

“The rain did limit the things you could do in the second half,” Elston said. “We were on defense most of the second half, playing for field position. Our kids played well. We prevented giving up the big play, and we executed well. I’m pumped.”

The Chieftains will play Friday at DeSoto.

Baldwin 24, Paola 6

Paola  Micah Mason rushed for 113 yards in the first half, including a 62-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, as the Bulldogs beat Paola for the first time since 1991.

“It’s a big win for our program to beat a team with as much tradition as Paola,” said coach Mike Berg, whose team improved to 2-0.

Mason, who was slowed by cramps in the second half for the second week in a row, finished with 124 yards on 13 carries.

Justin Goff added 98 yards rushing on seven carries for Baldwin, including TDs of six and 73 yards. Brian Lauridsen also was near the century mark with 85 yards on 14 carries.

Baldwin finished with 390 total yards, compared to 229 for Paola (1-1). Nathan Payne led the Panthers with 94 yards on 14 carries.

Baldwin’s margin might have been larger had the Bulldogs taken better care of the ball. Baldwin lost three of five fumbles in the first half under normal conditions and lost one of two after rain began to fall in the second half. Paola turned the ball over four times, including three fumbles.

Andrew Hannon added Baldwin’s final score on a 35-yard interception return.

Baldwin plays host to Gardner next week.

Anderson County-Eudora ppd.

Eudora  The game between Eudora and Anderson County was postponed with 2:16 left to play in the first quarter, after a delay of nearly an hour and a half because of persistent thunderstorms. The teams will resume play today at noon in Eudora.

The Cardinals had a 7-0 lead when play was halted, thanks to a 4-yard touchdown run by running back Andrew Pyle. Kicker Chance Rowland delivered the extra point.

Before the postponement, Pyle had rushed for 115 yards on nine carries. Eudora’s first play from scrimmage resulted in a 65-yard run from the senior standout.
