Marlins make mincemeat of Maddux

? Greg Maddux struggled through the worst first inning of his career, giving up six runs, and the Florida Marlins totaled 16 hits and three home runs to beat the Atlanta Braves 13-3 Friday night.

Maddux (13-6) departed after two innings trailing 7-0. His ERA, the lowest in the NL entering the game, rose from to 2.42 to 2.74. That left Randy Johnson of Arizona in the lead at 2.53.

Carl Pavano (5-10) allowed three hits and three runs in six innings.

Denver Juan Uribe broke out of a slump with four hits, and Paul Shuey walked in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Kent Mercker (3-0) got one out for the victory.
